At Matamata-Piako District Council, everything we do is about making a difference. We’re looking for a strategic and forward-thinking Solid Waste Lead to take ownership of our district’s solid waste activity and help shape sustainable outcomes for our community.
About the role
As our Solid Waste Lead, you will provide technical and strategic leadership across waste management, asset planning, and waste minimisation initiatives. You’ll play a key role in ensuring our services, infrastructure, and programmes are efficient, compliant, and future-focused.
This is a diverse and influential role where you will:
- Lead the Solid Waste Asset Management Plan and infrastructure planning
- Oversee closed landfill management, compliance, and environmental monitoring
- Provide expert advice to leadership, elected members, and stakeholders
- Drive waste minimisation and resource recovery initiatives
- Manage waste levy funding, grants, and financial reporting
- Support planning for transfer stations, growth, and future services
- Build strong relationships across government, industry, and community groups
What you’ll bring
We’re looking for someone who can combine technical expertise with strategic thinking and strong stakeholder engagement skills.
You will ideally have:
- Experience in solid waste, environmental management, or infrastructure planning
- Knowledge of NZ legislation (Waste Minimisation Act, RMA, LGA)
- Experience with asset management, compliance, and project delivery
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
- Confidence providing advice and influencing decision-making
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills
A relevant qualification and/or 5+ years’ experience in a related field will be highly regarded.
