Building Control Officer


Carterton District Council is looking for a capable, customer-focused Building Control Officer to join our Regulatory and Planning Team.

You’ll help ensure building work across our district is safe, compliant and completed to the right standards, as part of a small team responsible for delivering regulatory functions across the district.

About the Role | Mō te tūranga

In this role, you’ll be:

  • Processing building consent applications and assessing supporting documentation
  • Carrying out building, plumbing and drainage inspections
  • Making recommendations on Code Compliance Certificates and related matters
  • Investigating building compliance issues and supporting appropriate enforcement action
  • Providing clear, practical and impartial advice to customers and stakeholders
  • Maintaining accurate records to support quality assurance and BCA accreditation.

About You | Ko wai koe

Our ideal candidate will likely have:

  • A relevant technical qualification for building control work, or be working toward one
  • Working knowledge of the Building Act 2004, Building Code, Building Regulations and consent processes
  • Building, construction, plumbing and drainage, or related industry knowledge
  • The ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, legislation and standards
  • Clear communication skills and confidence explaining technical matters in plain English
  • Sound judgement, attention to detail, strong organisation skills and a current full New Zealand driver licence.

Experience in a local government Building Consent Authority or comparable regulatory environment would be an advantage.
