Join Waimakariri District Council Tree Asset Officer Trees are more than just part of the landscape – they shape our streets, support biodiversity, and make Waimakariri a great place to live.
We’re looking for a Tree Asset Officer who’s passionate about protecting and managing these valuable community assets. This role is all about making sure the right work happens, safely, on time, and to a high standard – while building positive relationships with contractors, residents and your team.
What you’ll be doing:
• Managing Council’s street, reserve, and cemetery tree maintenance contracts
• Carrying out regular audits and building strong professional partnerships with contractors
• Monitoring and responding to customer service requests and working directly with residents
• Maintaining accurate tree asset data, including removals, replacements and condition assessments.
• Supporting tree succession planning to ensure a healthy, diverse canopy for future generations
• Providing financial tracking, monthly reporting, and ensuring compliance with Council processes
• Working closely with contractors, internal teams, and the wider community
• Helping shape improvements to Council’s tree policies and programmes
What we’re looking for:
• A relevant qualification: National Diploma Level 5 or Technical Certificate in arboriculture, horticulture or a related field
• Experience in arboriculture, horticulture, asset / contract management, or relevant field work
• Strong communication skills – confident working with contractors and the public
• A calm, solution-focused approach when working through issues or community concerns
• An understanding of local government process (or a willingness to learn)
• A practical, organised mindset with great attention to detail
• Someone who takes ownership, solves problems, and enjoys working collaboratively
• A genuine passion for trees and delivering great outcomes for the community
