Temporary Intermediate Accountant - Part time position

Environment Southland is currently looking for a part time Intermediate Accountant to assist with monthly financial processing and month end close activities, at an operational level. This is a temporary position to cover an internal secondment which is due to end in September, however there may be scope to extend this end date.

The core of this role is to provide monthly financial processing and support, with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, and system integrity.

Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent will be required for around 7-10 days per month, predominately early to mid-month including:

  • 2 days prior to 10th of each month for initial processing
  • Further 3 days post 10th prior to 15th to complete processing
  • Further 3 days for reporting updates / collation

We are flexible on how those days are delivered, provided our month end timeframes are met.

The person we want on our team will have the ability to:

  • Complete month‑end processing activities, including:
    • Preparation and posting of journals
    • Processing accruals and prepayments
    • Fixed asset accounting, including additions, disposals, and depreciation runs

  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations for assigned accounts and investigating/resolving variances
  • Support the month‑end close process to ensure deadlines are met and data is complete and accurate
  • Undertake reconciliation and validation of financial data to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Assist with general ledger maintenance, including account structure integrity and coding accuracy
  • Identify errors, anomalies, or inconsistencies in financial data and correct them in a timely manner
  • Prepare standard month‑end financial outputs and working papers that support internal management reporting
  • Work within Council financial systems to:
    • Enter and maintain financial data
    • Perform data manipulation and basic report extraction as required

Whilst the role does not require a CA qualification, we do require strong hands-on processing experience and system confidence.

So, if you enjoy working in a great team, have excellent communication skills, are self-motivated, and believe in making a real contribution to the organisation you work for, then we want to hear from you.
