Sexton (Burials and Cemetery Maintenance)
We are looking for a very special individual to join our small team of Sextons here at Waipā District Council. Our Sextons are responsible for burials, interments, and the maintenance of Council-owned cemeteries within the Waipā District (Cambridge, Leamington, Te Awamutu, Kihikihi, and six other rural cemeteries). This particular role will work in the Te Awamutu side of the district predominantly.
Our Sextons are the public face of the Council for bereaved families and communities and are in regular contact with external parties such as funeral directors, so empathy, professionalism, and the ability to remain calm in challenging circumstances are essential. A high level of fitness and physical capability is needed, as well as the flexibility to be available to work some Saturdays.
As a Sexton, you will be responsible for:
- Burial plot management - identifying existing plots, selecting appropriate plots for new burials, digging graves using appropriate equipment and in accordance with health and safety guidelines, refilling and dressing graves;
- Cemetery maintenance - mowing, weeding, spraying, and undertaking repairs and maintenance;
- Maintaining plants and gardens;
- Liaising with bereaved families and funeral directors; and
- Managing onsite burial operations.
Prior Sexton experience is not essential as full training will be provided, but if you have transferable skills (e.g. landscaping, gardening, use of machinery) and a genuine interest in serving our communities in this unique and specialised role, we would love to hear from you.
We offer a supportive and friendly work environment, with a great team of people who are passionate about providing an excellent service for our communities. As an employer, Council provides generous leave entitlements and great benefits. If you'd like to join us, APPLY NOW!
Applications close 5pm, Wednesday, 4 November 2026.
