Senior / Intermediate Water Engineer

  • 5 weeks leave + birthday leave = real lifestyle balance
  • Training + development = pathway to become a drinking water expert
  • Support and lead planning for safe, resilient drinking water services

About the Role

This is more than a typical engineering role - it’s a chance to step into a position where you help shape how drinking water infrastructure is planned, funded, and delivered. With the transition into a new Water Services Council Controlled Organisation (WSCCO), this role sits at the centre of long-term decision-making, offering a rare opportunity to move beyond delivery and into true infrastructure influence. Whether you’re already operating at a senior level, or ready to step up, this role offers a clear pathway into technical leadership.

What you’ll be involved in:

  • Support and lead water infrastructure planning and master planning
  • Apply network and hydraulic modelling to inform key decisions
  • Contribute to long-term water service strategies and asset planning
  • Support development of business cases for major investment
  • Work across regulatory and planning frameworks in a complex environment
  • Collaborate with council teams, iwi, consultants, and key stakeholders
  • Translate technical insights into clear, practical direction

 What you’ll bring:

  • Experience in water supply / drinking water / three waters
  • Exposure to modelling tools (WSPro, InfoWorks, EPANET, WaterGEMS, MIKE or similar)
  • Understanding of water networks and/or infrastructure planning
  • Strong problem-solving and a practical mindset
  • Ability to think beyond design into strategy and long-term outcomes
  • Strong communication skills and confidence working with stakeholders

You don’t need to tick every box - we’re looking for potential as much as experience.

Why make the move

Currently part of New Plymouth District Council, this role will transition into a Water Services Council Controlled Organisation (WSCCO)—a dedicated organisation focused on delivering resilient, future-ready water infrastructure. This is a rare chance to join early and grow with the organisation whilst enjoying the fabulous environment New Plymouth and the Taranaki region offers.

If you’re currently in consulting engineering and considering a shift for greater impact, we’d love to hear from you.
