Senior Geospatial Analyst

At
Gisborne District Council, we’re looking for a Senior Geospatial Analyst to
take our spatial data and systems to the next level. This is a key role where
you’ll combine technical expertise, innovation, and leadership to deliver
smarter insights and better outcomes for our community.
This
role can be full-time or part-time for the right candidate, so if you’re
looking for flexibility, we’re open to a conversation.
From managing critical land information systems to developing cutting-edge GIS tools, your work will directly support how we plan, build, and care for Tairāwhiti.
Ngā Mahi ngā Takohanga Matua rānei | Duties include:
- Lead the management and continuous improvement of Council’s GIS systems, ensuring data is accurate, current, and integrated
- Maintain web mapping services, aerial imagery, LiDAR, and key land information systems (parcels, roads, addressing)
- Analyse and interpret spatial data to deliver insights, mapping, and advice that support decision-making
- Support electoral and population analysis, including mapping and scenario development
- Develop innovative geospatial tools, improve workflows, and automate processes
- Provide expert GIS support and training to staff and stakeholders
- Contribute to and lead projects that enhance GIS capability
- Mentor team members and support the Team Leader with planning and delivery
Ngā Pūkenga me Ngā Wheako e Hiahia ana | Skills and experience required:
- 7+ years’ experience in GIS (local government a bonus)
- Strong expertise in ESRI tools (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, Server, web apps)
- Experience with GIS databases, data modelling, and integration
- Skills in spatial analysis, scripting (Python/ArcPy), or similar
- A relevant qualification (degree or higher in GIS or related field)
- A sharp eye for detail and strong analytical thinking
- The ability to manage your time and priorities without needing babysitting
- Confidence communicating with both technical and non-technical people
- A genuine interest in mentoring others and lifting capability
