Senior Flood Hazard Engineer

Otago Regional Council (ORC) is seeking a Senior Flood Hazard Engineer to join our Natural Hazards team. This is a unique opportunity to apply advanced hydraulic and hydrologic modelling expertise to real-world flood risk challenges across diverse and dynamic environments - from alpine catchments to coastal floodplains.
You’ll work on projects that protect communities, infrastructure and ecosystems while helping the region adapt to long-term climate change impacts.
Key responsibilities
- Undertake hydraulic and hydrologic modelling to assess flood hazard and inform infrastructure planning.
- Provide technical input into river engineering and flood mitigation design.
- Provide expert advice in support of council decision-making, hearing and Environment Court processes, and community engagement.
- Lead and contribute to projects spanning flood hazard investigation, flood protection, climate adaptation and catchment management.
- Support real-time flood response and the development and improvement of flood forecasting systems and hydrological monitoring.
- Build collaborative working relationships internally and with District and City Councils, Emergency Management Otago, consultants and contractors.
What you’ll bring
We’re looking for a technically strong engineer who enjoys applying modelling to real-world challenges. You will likely have:
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or similar.
- Strong experience in hydraulic and hydrologic modelling, including use of HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS software.
- Experience with GIS and CAD software will be advantageous.
- Understanding of river systems and flood processes.
- Ability to translate complex modelling outputs into practical engineering solutions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
