Dunedin City Council's Finance team is on the lookout for a dynamic and detail-oriented Senior Financial Accountant to manage financial reporting and external audit processes, including the critical Local Water Done Well initiative. This role is crucial in ensuring our financial processes are robust, efficient, and aligned with statutory requirements.
The opportunity:
As the Senior Financial Accountant, you will play a key role in shaping the financial future of Dunedin. You will manage special projects, including the Local Water Done Well initiative, provide high-quality advice and support to the Executive Leadership Team, and ensure compliance with relevant policies and statutory requirements. Your expertise will be vital in supporting Dunedin's growth and helping us achieve our vision of being a world-class city.
Key responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with external financial reporting requirements related to Local Water Done Well
- Manage and deliver special projects related to financial accounting, taxation, and compliance
- Support the preparation and delivery of the Council's annual report, ensuring adherence to statutory requirements
- Formulate and monitor compliance with accounting policies and procedures
- Review and report on financial policies to the Executive Leadership Team, Council, and Council Committees
- Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of processes within the Financial Accounting team and the wider Finance Department
- Provide expert advice on the Local Water Done Well legislation, monitoring its progress and implications for the DCC Finance team
- Foster a continuous improvement culture and contribute to a collaborative working environment
What we're looking for:
To excel in this role, you will need:
- Extensive experience in financial accounting and reporting, with a strong technical accounting background
- Exceptional proficiency in Excel and IT systems, with a keen eye for detail and analytical skills
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across all levels of the organisation
- Proven experience in mentoring and developing team members, fostering a positive and proactive work environment
- A relevant tertiary qualification and CA certification
- A self-motivated, responsive, and 'can do' attitude, with a passion for driving excellence and achieving results

Salary Range $103,211 - $121,425
