Resource Advisor, Kaitohutohu – Environmental Regulation

  • Coasts, wetlands, rivers and streams - bring your resource management and planning skills to our natural environment!

  • Work on a diverse range of projects centred on RMA consenting and compliance.

  • Excellent training and development opportunities.

We are looking for an experienced Resource Advisor to join our Consenting and Compliance team, based in our new office in Cuba Mall.

About Greater Wellington:

There's a lot more to us than meets the eye. Here at Greater Wellington Regional Council, we're working on the big things that impact everyone in our region. Ensuring we are staying safe from the threat of flooding, protecting and enhancing the environment, improving the quality of our fresh water, ensuring we are all connected through our public transport network, and planning ahead for the potential impacts of climate change. We're people who are genuinely passionate about the work we do - because we believe what we do counts.

We provide a diverse range of benefits including working options that help our staff balance their lifestyle with their work commitments. We're also all about growing our people through professional development and experience across everything the council does.

About the role:

Join our friendly and supportive team who manage consenting and compliance for land development including bulk earthworks and stormwater management, forestry, and works in coastal and river environments. We work hard to keep sediment out of our waterways, and to avoid, minimise, remedy, (and sometimes offset) effects on biodiversity and mana whenua values. Projects on the go right now include cycleways, greenfield and regenerative housing developments, flood protection programmes, harbour dredging, and Riverlink!

You will have plenty of opportunities to be involved in complex consenting applications through the entire process from pre-application to compliance and enforcement. We work closely with other teams in the Environmental Regulation Department, and our Policy and Science teams to interpret and apply the Natural Resources Plan, the Resource Management Act, and national directions.

Skills and experience required:

You will be a skilled and confident RMA practitioner, and an excellent communicator who can build enduring relationships with our customers, mana whenua partners, and communities.

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in science, resource management or planning.

  • Experience working with district or regional councils, central government, private practice/consulting, community, iwi or volunteer groups.

  • The ability to lead multiple projects efficiently, to prioritise competing commitments, and proactively manage customer expectations.

  • The ability to analyse a wide range of technical information, work with experts and apply RMA-prescribed processes.

  • Pragmatism, resilience, persistence, and a focus on environmental outcomes.
