Te āheinga - The opportunity

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Rates Officer to join our Finance Team. This role will play a crucial part in the collection of rates ensuring compliance with council policies and legislative requirements. Amongst a number of other activities, the Rates Team are responsible for maintaining the rating database and providing an excellent level of service to ratepayers and other internal and external stakeholders. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the financial stability and growth of New Plymouth District.

Tino takohanga - Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the recovery of outstanding debt is achieved in terms of current policy and practice
  • The accurate processing of rates and water rates in accordance with prevailing policies
  • Pro-actively contribute to the maintenance of the rating and water billing data and systems
  • Respond to customer enquiries in a timely manner
  • Liaise with solicitors regarding various matters including property settlements
  • Provide information to internal and external parties as required
  • Support the maintenance and creation of water and rates invoices
  • Ensure that adequate records are maintained regarding all credit control contacts and adjustments to charges
  • Work collaboratively within the business to contribute to the continuous improvement of processes in rating and water billing
  • Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled

  • Initiative, excellent attention to detail, great computer skills and the ability to focus on thoroughness and accuracy
  • A positive team player attitude with great communication skills
  • A professional, customer focussed approach when responding to service requests and other enquiries
  • Proven ability to multi-task and prioritise workload
  • A good understanding of finance systems, credit control and debt collection
