Who are we? - Ko wai mātou?

Puke Ariki, meaning 'Hill of Chiefs', is located on a former pā site of Ngāti Te Whiti hapū (Te Āti Awa iwi). A combined museum, library, and visitors' centre, it brings together the stories of Taranaki's peoples and environment in innovative ways. Along with the Govett Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre, Puke Ariki forms part of New Plymouth District Council's Cultural Experiences group.

The opportunity - Te āheinga

Puke Ariki is seeking a friendly and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a permanent, part-time Visitor Host/Pou Rarou.

This position involves working 24 hours per week on a 7-day roster. If you enjoy engaging with people and have a passion for cultural and educational experiences, we would love to hear from you!

Key responsibilities - Ngā haepapa matua:

  • Welcome and provide exhibition information to visitors; lead exhibition/gallery tours as required
  • Ensure appropriate safety and security standards are observed by visitors and be vigilant in assessing safety and security risks at all times
  • Implement surveys and provide and record feedback
  • Ensure excellent presentation of Puke Ariki, maintaining attractive, accessible and clean spaces for visitors
  • Undertake administrative/project team tasks as required
  • Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation

Essential skills and experience - Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako

We are seeking friendly and approachable people who can tell great stories and have a passion for culture and communities, who can work independently as part of a team. You will join a diverse and high-performing team who love the work they do.

Training in processes and programmes will be provided, but experience working with art and events, and a high level of comfort with AV equipment would be an advantage.
