The opportunity - Te āheinga
Are you passionate about protecting our environment and ensuring sustainable development? We have an exciting opportunity for a Monitoring Officer to join our Consents and Regulatory Team on a permanent, full-time basis.
In this role, you'll be responsible for monitoring land use and environmental aspects of subdivision consents to ensure compliance with consent conditions and responding to complaints about land use. You'll play a key part in supporting the planning team by providing technical expertise to help meet the requirements of the Resource Management Act and other relevant legislation.
This is a dynamic position that requires a collaborative and consistent approach to customer engagement. You'll work closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to uphold environmental standards and contribute to positive outcomes for our community.

Key responsibilities - Ngā haepapa matua
- Monitoring of resource consents to ensure compliance
- Assist with the enforcement activities in accordance with the Resource Management Act, Building Act and other related legislation
- Provide accurate, dependable advice to Council teams in regard to compliance and monitoring
- Provide technical expertise
- Ensure a high standard of customer focus in responding to enquiries and requests for service
- Seek compliance through information, education, persuasion, mediation and/or legal action
- Prepare detailed reports with recommendations of enforcement action to enable sound decision making
- Participate in strategic monitoring and enforcement campaigns to ensure that monitoring is targeted to concentrate on non-compliant trends in support of Council-wide objectives
- Where directed, check Project Information Memorandum for compliance with the District Plan
Essential skills and experience - Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako
- Tertiary qualification in resource management or related discipline, or dispute resolution experience, or a minimum of two years' experience in monitoring in resource management or a related field or local government
- Sound knowledge of the Resource Management Act
- Ability to competently administer the requirements of the District Plan
- Effective verbal and written communication with the ability to present work in a form that is clear to customers and others, along with the ability to read and understand technical detail including building and development plans
- Willingness to deal frequently with customers and Council staff, along with proven ability to establish and maintain effective relationships
- Demonstrated planning and organisational skills
- Ability to effectively multi-task
- New Zealand driver's licence
- Understanding of and commitment to health and safety in the workplace

You can expect to start in this permanent, full-time role with a salary of between $81,545 - $87,887.
