Manager, Policy

We want more good people to come and do great things with us.

We love where we live. That's why we work so hard to look after our region and the people who live and work in the Waikato region.

Our work is as diverse as the region we care for; from the tip of the Coromandel Peninsula to the slopes of Ruapehu. We've got ambitious goals and there are some tricky issues, but that's what makes it so interesting.

We're looking for someone who can demonstrate exceptional resource management knowledge in a key leadership role within the Waikato Regional Council. We are recruiting for a Manager Policy to join our senior management team within the Science and Strategy Directorate.

Reporting to the Director Science and Strategy, this senior leadership role will champion a team of 14 professionals that lead the development of the region's resource management planning framework, who hold responsibility for ensuring resource management priorities are implemented throughout the organisation, and importantly you will provide strategic advice to Councillors and our Executive Leadership Team on resource management matters.

We are looking for someone who is invigorated by the resource management landscape, is dialled into central government direction, and who is excited by the possibilities of working with others to shape natural resource management for our Waikato community. If you are an energetic leader where building the right environment for the team to grow and learn is important to you, and you have the ability to think 'large', turning strategic concepts into practical on-the-ground resource management outcomes, then we will be a great fit for you.

Demonstrated success with building strong, lasting and influential relationships with partners and key strategic stakeholders will be critical in this role. Strongly honed communication skills, advanced managerial acumen, and an ability to inspire confidence in people from different disciplines will help you make the difference we are after.

The ideal candidate would have:

  • A true passion for leading and growing people
  • Strong local government and/or regional networks
  • Exceptional collaborative skills with the ability to draw together highly productive and diverse teams
  • Proven ability to persuade, guide and influence people
  • Knowledge of tikanga Maori, with a demonstrated understanding of working in partnership with Iwi.

This is a great opportunity to shape the future of the Waikato's economy, community and our environment.
