Permanent Full Time

Manager, Environmental Science

Want to lead delivery of environmental science for our communities and a healthy Wellington regional environment? Take a look at this video about our science strategy here – exciting!

We at Greater Wellington Regional Council contribute to our health and wealth of our rohe by one simple philosophy and we call it the GW Way.

Put simply it means

  • We're on the same side – one team working for one common goal
  • No sacred cows – always looking for better ways of doing things
  • For the people by the people – everyone here is for everyone out there
  • Own it – take responsibility and focus on the outcome

And you could be part of the team!

The role of Manager, Environmental Science has recently become available. This senior manager role contributes to the work of the Council's Environment Management Group and maintains statutory requirements providing leadership to a great team of specialist staff providing quality science for the community.

The primary function of this role is people leadership although you'll have a background in science and understand the changes we have in front of us, especially around achieving better water quality.

However you don't want to do science, you want to lead through people and want to continue our delivery of science into community processes and understand its role alongside other knowledge systems, such as Matauranga Maori.

You will:

  • create conversations and dialogue - this is science on tap, not science on top
  • understand that we need to work in partnership for the betterment of our environment and will continue our partnerships with mana whenua and relevant organisations
  • be a strategic thinker and be a strong influencer to ensure the science and monitoring needs are fit for purpose for air, water, coast, land and contaminated sites.

The Environmental Science Group is one of five Departments in this Group, all of which are collegial, collaborative and work towards shared outcomes. In this role you will make valuable contributions to our continuing science journey, one which has a vision to empower decision-making through great relationships, partnerships, and integration.
