The opportunity - Te āheinga
Are you passionate about connecting people with knowledge, culture, and community? Puke Ariki is seeking a dynamic and customer-focused Librarian to join our team. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a vibrant, innovative library and museum hub in the heart of New Plymouth.
In this 32-hour-per-week role, you'll work on a 7-day roster, delivering exceptional, proactive customer service to a diverse range of visitors. You'll play a key role in supporting the delivery of our library services and literacy programmes, helping to inspire learning, creativity, and connection across our community.

Key responsibilities - Ngā haepapa matua:
- Undertake rostered shifts on the desk, to deliver efficient and effective service of Library and Council Services including circulation tasks, Readers Advisory for Adult and Children's literature, reference and enquiry assistance and public computing
- Be accountable for daily banking and reconciliation to Finance
- Proactively use judgement and interpretation to prioritise customer needs and respond to their requirements through the provision of professional services and appropriate resources. Ensure customers receive service that exceeds their expectations
- Resolve minor problems and issues for customers and colleagues
- Make decisions and follow clearly laid out procedures
- Ensure that customers are assisted to be self-sufficient in their use of the library's technology
- Provide collection management functions, shelving, shelf checking, tidying and cleaning, to ensure the library and its collections are always presented in an attractive and tidy manner
- Provide a series of displays to promote library services and collections as required
- Support the Mobile Library service and schedule as required
- Work between the Adult and Children’s/Youth floors as required
- Contribute to and deliver efficient and effective library programmes - both regular and one-off events, working with the Public Programs and Learning team
- Contribute to a positive team and library culture
- Undertake Library Assistant tasks when required
Essential skills and experience - Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako:
- A relevant Library qualification or working towards one is desirable
- Customer service experience
- Experience in public libraries and competency in library management systems
- Able to build and maintain successful relationships with individuals and community groups
- Acts as an effective team member, acknowledging the value of diversity
- Proven experience and literacy of a wide range of technology and library systems
- Full driver's licence essential
- Knowledge and practice of Te Ao Māori

You can expect to start in this permanent, 32 hour week role with a salary of between $59,279 and $61,856 pro-rata.
