Legal Counsel

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and forward-thinking Legal Counsel to lead our in-house legal services. This is a key leadership role where you'll be providing practical, reliable legal advice across a wide range of areas—from public and administrative law to commercial, property, litigation, and regulatory matters.

You'll be working alongside our Executive leadership team, Council and elected members, ensuring legal guidance supports good decision-making. You'll also manage a small team and work with external legal providers where needed.

What you'll be doing

  • Providing strategic, timely legal advice to Council teams and decision-makers
  • Managing legal proceedings and ensuring we're represented to a high standard
  • Leading a small legal team and promoting a positive, high-performing culture
  • Reviewing and managing Council's legal documentation and official information requests
  • Sharing legal knowledge and training with staff across the organisation

What you will bring

We're after someone with solid legal experience, a collaborative approach, and the confidence to give clear, practical advice. You'll need to be comfortable working at pace, juggling priorities, and thinking strategically about how legal services can support better outcomes for our communities.

You'll also bring:

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and admission as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand
  • At least 4 years of post-qualification legal experience (local government or public sector experience is a big plus)
  • A good working knowledge of local government legislation (e.g. LGA, RMA, Building Act, LGOIMA, Rating Act)
  • Strong leadership and team management skills
  • Great communication and relationship-building skills
  • A problem-solving mindset and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • A strong sense of integrity, accountability, and public service

Why work with us?

This is a great opportunity to make a real impact in your community while developing your leadership career.

We're a supportive, forward-looking team that values innovation, collaboration, and practical solutions.

You'll enjoy variety in your work, the chance to lead a high-performing team, and a workplace that supports your wellbeing and professional growth.
