About the Role

As Governance Team Leader, you will be at the heart of the Council's democratic and decision‑making processes. You will lead the delivery of high‑quality governance services, supporting elected members through meetings, elections, representation reviews, and induction and development programmes. The role also ensures strong, efficient administrative support across the organisation, enabling Council business to run smoothly and compliantly.

Do You Have What It Takes?

You'll provide trusted governance advice to elected members, the Chief Executive, and senior leaders, while leading and developing a skilled Governance team. You will oversee statutory obligations, democratic processes, key governance documentation, and annual work programmes, ensuring professional, timely, and transparent outcomes. This role also contributes to organisational capability, stakeholder engagement, compliance, health and safety leadership, information management, and strong partnerships with iwi and the wider community.

About You

This role will suit an experienced governance professional with proven people leadership skills and a strong understanding of local government legislation, standing orders, and governance frameworks. You are politically savvy, detail‑focused, and an excellent communicator with strong writing and relationship‑building skills. Proactive and well organised, you thrive in a small, multi‑skilled team and bring a positive, customer‑focused approach to your work. A clean driver's licence is essential.

The salary range for this position is between $83,430pa and $92,700pa and the appointed starting level will be dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed during interviews with shortlisted candidates.
