As a Regional Council we're responsible for flood protection, public transport, civil defence, and more.

Together we're taking action to shape a thriving and resilient Canterbury, now and for future generations. Toitū te marae o Tāne, toitū te marae o Tangaroa, toitū te tangata, If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.

Kōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role

Flooding is the most common natural hazard to affect Canterbury, and a large proportion of the region’s population live in areas that are susceptible to flooding. This job offers you the opportunity to play a key part in the management of flood hazards in Canterbury, by ensuring we have the information required to respond effectively to future flood events. You will be responsible for carrying out 2D flood modelling to quantify the flood carrying capacity of river channels, and the depth and extent of flooding that could result from a range of river breakout scenarios.

This fixed term role will support our existing flood modellers to expedite planned flood modelling projects and help to ensure that our knowledge of flooding meets community expectations.

Mōu │ About You

To be successful in this role, you will need to have practical experience with flood modelling software and be a proficient GIS user. The position requires you to be an independent problem solver and practical thinker, to have a solid understanding of the principles and methods involved in managing natural hazards, and to have an eye for detail. You’ll have a relevant degree, ideally combined with 1 – 2 years’ experience. Recent graduates will also be considered.
