Environmental Scientist Natural Hazards


In partnership with our community, Environment Southland (Southland Regional Council) is responsible for the sustainable management of Southland's natural resources - our land, our water, our air and our coast. As a Regional Council we operate across a large geographical region which extends from Stewart Island to Fiordland.

Having recently undergone an organisational redesign to ensure that we have the right structure and resources in place to respond to the changing needs of our communities, and the unique environment that we operate in, we currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Environmental Scientist Natural Hazards.

This is a newly created role within our Science Integration team and you will provide research, analysis and reporting in the field of natural hazards.

As an expert in the organization, you will be responsible for managing and contributing to complex studies, mentoring others, and assisting with mitigation and adaptation strategies.

You will be expected to apply advanced modelling and analysis to address critical natural hazard challenges, working with cross-disciplinary teams and stakeholders.

If you have a master's degree or Ph.D. in Geology, Environmental Science, Meteorology, Geography, Earth Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field, a minimum 3 years relevant experience in natural hazard research, risk assessment, or related fields, expertise with hazard mapping, geospatial analysis (e.g., GIS)., and scientific modelling, and familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB) then you may be the person we are looking for.

An initial offer of remuneration will be made within the range $97,740 - $103,170.
