The opportunity - Te āheinga

We are seeking a dynamic and organised Environmental Officer to join our Consents and Regulatory team. With a good mix of field and office work, we're looking for a team player who can also work independently, can think on their feet and solve problems. We're after someone with great communication and customer service skills, as well as a calm and solution-focused approach to issues. The successful candidate will have sound decision-making skills and confidence applying and interpreting legislation and policy to relevant situations.

Key responsibilities - Ngā haepapa matua:

  • Monitoring food premises within the district subject to the Food Act 2014
  • Monitoring the activities of Alcohol Licensed Premises, through a combination of inquiring and reporting on applications under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012
  • Monitoring the activities of registered premises under the Health Act 1956 - through a combination of education, inspection, and enforcement to meet statutory obligations
  • Responding to and investigating complaints regarding noise and ensuring compliance with the Resource Management Act 1991 and the District Plan rules
  • Carrying out bylaw investigation and enforcement
  • Other Local Government Act activities including administering Council policies, e.g. Gambling/Venue Policy, Local Alcohol Policy
  • Actively ensure that legislative requirements and Council policies and procedures are fulfilled, particularly in relation to all key relevant legislation

Essential skills and experience - Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako:

  • A tertiary qualification in Health Science or equivalent that will meet the requirements of the Environmental Health Officers Qualifications Regulations 1993
  • Preference for industry knowledge, e.g. relevant legislation, food safety
  • Experience in Local Government
  • At least three years experience desirable
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Current New Zealand driver's licence

You can expect to start in this permanent, full-time role with a salary of between $81,545 - $87,887.
