Emergency Management Advisor

Due to a recent internal promotion, Emergency Management Southland is seeking a dedicated individual with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to join our team as an Emergency Management Advisor. This is a unique opportunity to make a real impact in ensuring the resilience and well-being of our community in the face of emergencies and disasters.

About the role: Civil Defence Emergency Management has four areas of activity, known as the '4Rs': Reduction, Readiness, Response and Recovery. The Emergency Management Advisor will be working across all four areas and key duties will include:

  • Proactively build relationships with community and key stakeholders to deliver outcomes that increase preparedness
  • Support communities to develop community response plans
  • Develop and delivering public education programmes
  • Deliver training across the 4R's to Southland council staff, communities and volunteers
  • Actively participate in response to support the Emergency Coordination Centre operations
  • Availability for rostered on-duty obligations and after-hours work is a core part of the role.

Ideally, we are seeking someone with a background in emergency management. However, if you have a passion for community development and a strong interest in emergency management, with a relevant qualification and/or experience (including volunteer work) in related fields such as communications, planning, community consultation, emergency services or NGO's we also invite you to apply.

The following attributes and experience will be sought for this position:

  • Demonstrated knowledge to fulfil requirements of the key accountabilities specified for this position.
  • Diploma in Emergency Management, Community Development, or equivalent qualification or 3 years' experience in Emergency Management systems and functions
  • Coordinated Incident Management System (level 4) qualified
  • Experience in organising meetings and engaging local community groups
  • Ability to speak at community meetings and events
  • Able to coordinate and deliver training for council staff and community partners
  • Able to use social media and understands the various platforms available
  • Competent with Microsoft products, knowledge of Office 365 is desirable
  • Experience with Health & Safety legislation
  • Clean, full, current driver's license.
