Director – Strategy, Performance & Design

  • Newly-created leadership role
  • Drive transformational change initiatives
  • Oamaru-based

Waitaki District stretches from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean, crossing Otago and Canterbury. As Australasia’s only UNESCO Geopark, the district boasts spectacular and unique landscapes and celebrates small-town friendliness, boutique beer and wine, award-winning restaurants, crafts and leisure/lifestyle activities (including a world-class cycle trail). The hub of the District is Oamaru – well known for its pristine Victorian heritage district.

Waitaki District Council is a progressive Council that is leading the way in how councils can serve communities more effectively and efficiently. As part of the council’s transformation, a new ELT has been created that is supporting the organisation to deliver in a more customer focussed and integrated way, focussed on place and ensuring delivery of improved value for residents and ratepayers.

The Director – Strategy, Performance and Design is a new role that will lead a multi-functional directorate, with functions including strategy, policy, continuous improvement, economic & community development, commercialisation, and asset planning. The primary components of this role will be leading the corporate direction of Council, developing strategy and Council priorities, and ensuring their delivery through services, programmes, projects and partnerships. The role will be cross-Council, to drive initiatives in the Organisation Performance Management Framework; these initiatives include continuous improvement, risk management, annual and long-term planning, CCO liaison, and asset planning management.

To be successful in this key position, you will be a senior leader who is also an exceptional people leader. Having extensive experience leading change is a must, as is having a collaborative approach to how you operate. You will be focused on continuous improvement and how an organisation can shift to further improve culture and be more effective and efficient. Having an understanding of te ao Māori and key principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi will be important, and an understanding of the Local Government sector would be an advantage.

This is a rare opportunity to contribute to organisational transformation that will lead to better outcomes for this District and its communities.
