Democracy Advisor - Palmerston North City Council

  • Small city benefits, big city ambition
  • Provide strategic advice, build critical networks, and inform Council decision making

Palmerston North is a vibrant, progressive and ambitious city. The city is currently experiencing growth in all sectors and competes with other regional centres amidst technological and demographic change for capital, talent and visitors.

In this context Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) provides services to 90,000 residents, employing 600 staff across a broad range of functions. PNCC is leading a bold new vision for Palmerston North: small city benefits, big city ambition that will help the metro achieve its potential, capitalise on its strengths, and thrive in the future.

Currently PNCC is seeking to appoint a Democracy Advisor to join its Strategy & Planning unit. Reporting to the Democracy Manager, this role will facilitate an effective relationship between governance and operations, ensure robust and transparent democratic processes, and provide advice that meets all relevant legislative and policy requirements. In doing so this role will collaborate closely with democracy administrators, the democracy support officer (both of whom are team members within Strategy & Planning), and the Mayoral office. Along with the Democracy Manager, this role serves as a key conduit between governance and operations, ensuring PNCC has robust, open democratic processes.

Preferred candidates will have a law or political science qualification, and have experience in providing advisory and policy services in a comparable context (though local government background is not required). Given the level of engagement with the Mayoral office, the role requires a strong relationship-builder who can maintain strong, collaborative networks with a diverse range of stakeholders.  If you’re looking for a role where you can work for a great council and lead a high performing team that provides real value for Palmerston North, this role represents a compelling next career step.
