The opportunity - Te āheinga
Are you ready to lead transformational change through data and digital innovation?
NPDC is seeking a visionary Data and GIS Lead to join our Digital Enablement Leadership team on a four year fixed-term contract. In this pivotal role, you will lead a team of eight direct reports, driving strategic initiatives that harness the power of data and geospatial intelligence to shape the future of our district.
This is a strategic leadership role where you'll drive the evolution of data maturity across the organisation. You'll lead the development and execution of data and GIS strategies, ensuring our platforms and practices are future-ready, secure, and aligned with organisational goals.
As a trusted advisor and change agent, you'll collaborate across departments to embed data-driven decision-making, champion data literacy, and foster a culture of innovation. Your leadership will empower teams to unlock the full potential of data - delivering smarter insights and better outcomes for our community.
Key responsibilities - Ngā haepapa matua:
- Lead the strategic direction and operational excellence of NPDC's data and GIS functions
- Shape and evolve the organisation's data strategy in alignment with our Digital Strategy
- Champion enterprise-wide data governance, quality, and accessibility
- Lead and inspire the Data and GIS team by fostering a collaborative, innovative, and high-performance culture. Support team growth through coaching, mentoring, and clear performance development
- Drive innovation in data platforms and GIS technologies, ensuring they remain current and effective.
- Promote data literacy and empower staff to use data confidently and responsibly
- Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and data integration solutions
- Ensure compliance with data security, privacy, and regulatory standards
- Stay ahead of industry trends and position NPDC as a leader in data management and digital enablement
Essential skills and experience - Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako:
- Proven leadership experience in data strategy, GIS, or digital transformation
- Tertiary qualification in information technology, GIS, or a related discipline
- Strong business analysis skills and a track record of delivering data-driven solutions
- Expertise in data governance, data warehousing, and enterprise reporting
- A collaborative mindset and ability to influence across diverse teams
Desirable:
- Experience working with Kaupapa Māori, competency in Tikanga and a dedication to applying Te Ao Māori lens
- Experience working in a complex public facing environment with working knowledge of Local Government legislation

You can expect to start in this full-time, fixed-term role with a salary of between $111,531 and $120,204.
