Taitara Mahi – Credit Controller 
Permanent Full-Time, 40 Hours Per Week 

Join our Finance Team as a Credit Controller and take ownership of debt management across the Hastings District Council. This is a key role suited to an experienced credit professional who can confidently manage collections, build strong customer relationships and influence positive payment outcomes across a diverse portfolio. The ideal candidate is a strong team player, bringing a positive, can do attitude and sound judgment and confidence in decision making. 

You’ll play a critical role in managing credit risk and delivering effective debt collection services across all areas of Council. This requires a balanced approach, combining sound judgement, strong negotiation skills and a customer-focused mindset to achieve outcomes while working constructively with our community and stakeholders. 

The duties and responsibilities of this role will include: 

  • Preparing reports on the status of credit and collection activities 
  • Strong relationship building and regular engagement with customers to arrange payment or to negotiate payment arrangements. 
  • Monitoring and reporting on credit and collection performance, providing insights to relevant Council Committees and Managers.  
  • Contributing to the development and improvement of credit management policies,  systems and procedures. 
  • Applying consistent, effective credit risk management practices across a varied portfolio 
Ōu wheako – about you: 
To be successful in this role you will have: 
  • Proven experience in a credit control or collections role, with a strong understanding of credit management practices  
  • Diploma in Business/ Accounting principles or equivalent level of learning through experience. 
  • Confidence in managing challenging conversations and negotiating sustainable payment outcomes  
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining accuracy  
  • Sound judgement, resilience, and the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure  
  • The ability to build trust and credibility with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
