Communications Manager
We’re looking for an experienced Communications Manager to provide strategic leadership across communications, engagement and Civil Defence at Thames‑Coromandel District Council.
About the Role
This senior
role shapes how Council communicates with its communities, stakeholders and
elected members. Working closely with the Mayor, CEO and Executive Leadership
Team, you’ll lead the development and delivery of Council’s Communication and
Engagement Strategy, provide trusted strategic advice, and lift organisational
capability.
You will oversee a small team
of practitioners, fostering a collaborative and performance-focused
environment. You should be operationally sound, politically astute, and skilled
at informing and influencing decisions.
Key focus areas include:
- Strategic communications leadership and advice
- Community engagement and stakeholder relationships
- Media relations and channel development
- Leading and developing a high‑performing communications team
- Supportive internal communication processes and systems
- Oversight of Civil Defence and Emergency Management communications
- Supporting culturally confident, inclusive communications that reflect Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitments
About You
You’ll bring extensive experience in communications and engagement (ideally in the public sector), strong political and community acumen, and proven people leadership capability. You’re strategic, confident influencing at senior levels, and committed to inclusive, culturally respectful communication grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
- A tertiary qualification in relevant field
- Extensive experience in communications, engagement, media, stakeholder relationship management, and the public sector
- Knowledge of local government processes and legislative requirements
- Strong strategic ability, interpersonal and communication skills, solution-focused mindset, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
