Climate Change Champion
Nelson City Council became one of New Zealand’s first local authorities to declare a climate emergency, recognising that human-induced climate change represents one of the great threats to humanity, civilisation and other species, and urgent action is needed to mitigate and adapt to this global challenge.
An important first action for Council following the declaration is the appointment of a Climate Change Champion to advance climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies for Nelson.
The purpose of the Climate Change Champion is to work with Council officers and the community to facilitate practical outcomes for climate change response, to collaborate on climate strategy, to regularly engage elected members on climate change priorities and to keep the community informed of Council’s actions.
Sound like you? You are likely to have a relevant scientific background combined with outstanding programme management, communication and facilitation skills. Alternatively you might have a background in climate or environmental policy, with an excellent ability to support others to understand and respond to climate change issues within their areas of responsibility.
Regardless of your background, you will be highly pragmatic and action-oriented, and absolutely committed to supporting the Council to achieve clear outcomes to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
You will already be familiar with the work of agencies (science, government and NGO) and individuals who are active thinkers and researchers monitoring and reporting on climate change. You will have an understanding of the responsibilities and obligations of the local government sector, and how climate change is likely to affect those responsibilities. You will be able to quickly identify where Council can make an impact, and work effectively with those who have decision-making power and technical expertise to deliver meaningful improvements. You will have outstanding relationship management, written and verbal communication skills. In addition you will thrive in a context which is characterised by diverse and divergent views, strong emotions, and organisational and external ambiguity.
