Building Surveyor - Expressions of Interest

About the role

Selwyn is one of thefastest-growing districts in New Zealand. Growing both in residential and commercial spaces. We have a range of building roles to suit Building Consent Authority (BCA) and Territorial Authority (TA) functions.

Residential Processing and Inspections:

Our Residential Building Team is responsible for reviewing and inspecting residential building consents across Selwyn, ensuring compliance with legislation and supporting safe building outcomes for our community.

Building Compliance:

Our Building Compliance Team is responsible for undertaking the territorial authority functions under the Building Act, ensuring buildings in Selwyn are safe and fit for purpose. Working with our community you'll promote a culture of building compliance and understanding, supporting and being empathetic while achieving the necessary outcomes.

Key aspects of each role include:

• Processing/Inspecting a wide range of building consents
• Providing advice and expertise on Building Act matters to applicants and internal teams
• Communicating with agents, architects, licensed building practitioners, and applicants — often under pressure — to solve problems and provide clear guidance
• Supporting an integrated approach to customer service by collaborating with other departments (e.g., planning, property, plumbing, and drainage)
• Maintaining competency through technical audits and our biannual competency framework
• Staying up to date with legislative changes and adapting to new systems and processes

You will work as part of our close-knit team to deliver a superior end to end customer experience.

About you

Our ideal candidate is calm, honest, and approachable, with relevant BCA or TA experience that enables you to hit the ground running. You're detail-oriented but able to see the big picture, and you bring a natural problem-solving mindset to your work.

• A NZ Diploma in Building Surveying (Level 6) or equivalent NZ qualification with current R2 or R3 competence
• Understanding and application of the Building Act, Regulations, Building Code, Standards, and the consent process
• Ability to make technical decisions using sound judgement in a timely manner, risk analysis, and research
• High-level digital literacy and experience in a range of software applications
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills
• A current Class 1 New Zealand driver's licence
