About us

Join a team that’s shaping the future of one of New Zealand’s fast-growing districts.

The Waimakariri District is a vibrant and rapidly expanding region just north of Christchurch, offering an exceptional lifestyle and strong community spirit.

With a population over 69,000 residents, the district continues to grow, driven by its attractive mix of rural charm, urban convenience, and strategic infrastructure investment. At Waimakariri District Council, we’re proud to support this growth by delivering high-quality services and planning for a thriving future.

About the Role

Waimakariri District Council is seeking an experienced Asset Planning Engineer to support the planning and management of our roading and transport assets in a fast-growing community

This is a key technical role where you’ll help ensure our transport network is safe, resilient, cost‑effective and fit for purpose now and into the future. Working within the Utilities & Roading Group, the role sits at the intersection of data, planning and real‑world decision making.

You’ll work closely with transport strategy, delivery and finance teams to help Council understand what we have, how it’s performing, and where investment is needed — translating sound asset information into practical, long‑term decisions that benefit the community.

What you’ll be involved in

In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Keep Council’s transportation plans current, practical and aligned with national requirements
  • Turn asset data and condition information into insights that support better investment decisions
  • Support renewals planning, funding processes and long‑term forecasting across the transport activity
  • Contribute technical input into resilience thinking and broader infrastructure strategy work
  • Provide clear, down‑to‑earth technical advice that helps others navigate complex asset information

You’ll also be involved in core asset management activities such as development and maintaining Transportation Activity Management Plans, improving asset data quality and condition driven programmes, and working alongside finance and operational teams to ensure information is robust and reliable.

This is a hands‑on technical role, offering scope to apply your judgement, improve how things are done, and see your work translated into meaningful outcomes for the Community.

About You:

We’re looking for a collaborative and technically capable  professional who enjoys combining analysis with practical delivery. You’ll ideally have:

  • A tertiary qualification in engineering (or equivalent)
  • 7+ years’ experience in road asset management and planning within a local authority or similar environment
  • A strong working  knowledge of RAMM, NZTA requirements, asset lifecycle planning, and financial modelling.
  • Experience preparing and maintaining Activity Management Plans and supporting infrastructure strategies.
  • Strong  written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • A solutions focused mindset and commitment to continuous improvement.

What We Offer:

  • We offer a competitive salary package, great working conditions and a very supportive and friendly team environment where you can develop your career and really make a difference for the community
  • The opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of transport infrastructure in a fast‑growing district
  • Work locally from our Rangiora Service Centre with opportunities to contribute at a district‑wide level
