About us

Waimakariri District is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing regions, with over 69,000 residents enjoying a unique blend of rural charm and urban convenience. Located just 30 minutes north of Christchurch, our district offers vibrant communities, stunning natural landscapes, and a lifestyle that’s hard to beat. It’s a great place to live, work and play.

At Waimakariri District Council, we’re proud to work at the heart of our community. We’re committed to delivering high-quality services that support the wellbeing of our residents and the sustainability of our environment.

About the role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated 3 Waters Compliance Officer to lead and coordinate stormwater compliance and monitoring activities across the District to cover a period of parental leave.

In this role, you will play a key part in ensuring Council meets its responsibilities under global stormwater network discharge consents. You’ll work closely with internal teams, consultants, contractors, and the wider community to protect our waterways and support sustainable growth.

This is an excellent opportunity to apply your technical expertise, build strong working relationships, and contribute to environmental outcomes that make Waimakariri a great place to live.

Key responsibilities

You will be responsible to:

  • Lead the management and delivery of the stormwater monitoring programme to ensure compliance with Global Stormwater Network Discharge Consents. This includes oversight and management of consultant contracts for stormwater sampling and monitoring.
  • Prepare and coordinate the annual compliance and stormwater monitoring reports for the Global Stormwater Network Discharge Consents covering Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Woodend and Oxford.
  • Plan and undertake compliance audits related to stormwater discharges, and coordinate investigations and corrective actions to address and resolve any identified non-compliance.
  • Respond to and coordinate incidents involving spills into the Council stormwater network or waterways.

About you

You’ll bring a strong environmental or technical background and a collaborative, solutions-focused approach to your work. You will ideally have:

  • A diploma or equivalent qualification in engineering, planning, science, or environmental disciplines
  • At least one year of relevant experience in water, environmental, or civil engineering-related work
  • A sound understanding of compliance, monitoring, and reporting processes (or a strong willingness to learn)
  • The ability to analyse technical and scientific data and clearly communicate key findings to a range of audiences
  • Strong report-writing and organisational skills
  • An interest in local government and working with communities

You’ll also be someone who takes ownership of their work, works well within a team environment, and engages professionally with contractors, stakeholders, and members of the public.

What we offer

At Waimakariri District Council, we offer a competitive salary package, great working conditions and a very supportive and friendly team environment where you can develop your career and really make a difference for the community. A workplace that embraces integrity, innovation, and continuous improvement
