The Roles:

Positions are currently available in both Queenstown and Wanaka.

The Location

Queenstown and Wanaka are nestled in the Southern Alps of New Zealand on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka and are rated amongst the World’s top destinations.

The Role

The Senior Planner, Resource Consenting role processes applications (predominantly resource consents) under the RMA, HASHAA and LGA. This primarily involves processing higher complexity resource consents in one of New Zealand’s most dynamic planning environments.

A large component of this role involves being a delegated decision-maker as well as reviewing other planner’s reports. This provides for an excellent opportunity to grow your leadership skills and mentor other planners.

The Queenstown Lakes District is highly litigious with passionate and well-resourced stakeholders, which results in a number of resource consents in the Environment Court. The Senior Planner will be required to participate in Court mediations, preparing evidence and attending hearings, as required.

Queenstown Lakes District is experiencing rapid growth as well as changes to the District Plan and other policies and legislation. Senior Planners are expected to demonstrate initiative and ensure sound planning outcomes.

You will be working in a team of competent and supportive planners, within an organisation committed to being the best in the country.

About You

  • Tertiary qualification in planning, resource management or related field required
  • Membership of the New Zealand Planning Institute or eligible for membership
  • Significant knowledge and practical application within the planning industry (5+ years); New Zealand experience in application of the RMA is strongly preferred
  • Council hearing experience required; Environment Courts hearing experience preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent leadership skills and displays initiative
  • Demonstrated ability to present topics to the public, professionals, at hearings and at meetings
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining relationships across a broad range of stakeholders
  • Highly motivated, achievement-oriented and innovative professional
  • Can-do and outcome-focussed attitude, with an ability to cut through complexity and solve problems
