The Hawke’s Bay Opera House is an iconic Hawke’s Bay landmark and together with the Opera House Theatre, Municipal Building, a Plaza, and the Eastbourne forms the Opera House Precinct owned by the Hastings District Council.

The purpose of this position is to manage and promote the Opera House Precinct as a local, regionally and nationally recognised hub and home for performing arts that reflects the diversity of cultural interests and to develop the Opera House Precinct for present and future generations of artists, audiences, visitors and local communities.

About the role

The Opera House itself is a unique venue with a fascinating history. Designed by Architect henry Eli White, it is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s best examples of Spanish Mission architecture. The Municipal Building was formerly the Hastings City Council Chambers and currently comprises of office space and function rooms, with a large assembly room on the first floor used for dinners and balls.  Both buildings hold a Category 1 heritage status.

Situated close to the CBD the Precinct is in a central location in a town known for its arts and culture and is popular with tourists. Understanding how to tap into these markets and business, building relationships with established local, regional and national groups is key to making this Precinct a success.

The Manager is responsible for leading a multi-skilled team; growing the venue’s reputation locally, regionally and nationally with stakeholders, producers and promoters; generating income; driving commercial retail revenue; implementing growth plans; and devising, with colleagues, a development plan to maximise the potential of the venue.

To succeed in this role you will need to be entrepreneurial, creative, comfortable with variety and open-minded. You'll need to have solid management skills and be able to balance the very broadest range of requirements and resources effectively. You'll be able to make the most of opportunities available to you and able to build on these to achieve success. A proven ability to consolidate costs and generate new sources of income is essential, as is a proven ability to effectively manage a diverse team.


What we are looking for

  • Exceptional operator, with a proven track record in leadership, networking, strategy and delivery.
  • Ability to think, plan and execute on multiple projects simultaneously, often dealing with complex issues and managing multiple stakeholders with competing needs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability build relationships, engage and influence at all levels.
  • Extensive experience managing teams including attracting, training & mentoring talent.
  • Significant crisis and issues experience, with a demonstrated ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in fast-paced, high-pressure situations.
  • An extensive network across the arts and culture sector, business and community groups.
  • Strong understanding of the Opera House Precincts business environment, audiences and stakeholders combined with a broad knowledge of the arts and tourism industries, its practices and supporters.
  • Motivated self-starter with a focus on delivery.
  • Collaborative with strong analytical mind and creative approach to problem solving.
