Chief Financial Officer - New Plymouth District Council
Located on the stunning West Coast of New Zealand and with the majestic Mt Taranaki as its backdrop, New Plymouth is known for its rugged coastlines, world class surfing spots, fertile farming land, major events, and winter sport. It’s no wonder New Plymouth has been judged the best place to live in New Zealand (North & South Magazine) and the best small city in the world (Liveable Communities Awards).
New Plymouth District, with a population of around 79,000 people, makes up the largest district in Taranaki. The Council is shaping the future of the district through a 30-year blueprint focused on building and sustaining a strong and resilient economy, clean, green, livable environment and an inclusive, connected community. This is strongly supported through the council’s vision of building New Plymouth as a ‘Lifestyle Capital’ underpinned by the values of Community being at the centre of everything they do, Kotahitanga, a sense and an action of unity, Creativity and creating positive experiences, and Excellence and pride in their performance.
The NPDC’s Chief Financial Officer is a critical leadership role, as a member of the executive team reporting to the Chief Executive, and with significant organisational leadership responsibility including business services (Finance), procurement, legal, risk and property. This is a highly visible role with direct line of sight to the mayor, councilors and other key stakeholders with responsibility for leading and delivering strategic and operational financial systems, as well as other corporate services listed above.
This represents a unique and exciting opportunity to work for a focused and committed council undergoing a major transformation in the way it works and supports the district. The Council’s focus on organisational development requires courageous leadership and the ability to anticipate technology change and adapt accordingly.
We’re interested in hearing from CA qualified individuals, or those with significant accounting experience, who possess excellent people leadership capabilities and a track record of creating clear team vision and accountabilities. To be successful you will be a strategic and innovative thinker and decision maker with proven leadership skills that empower others to perform at their best. You will have a collaborative working style and ability to lead and work with a variety of projects and stakeholders. In addition, you will bring the ability to empathise with a wide range of communities and business groups, along with experience in effectively integrating political and community priorities.
